Tempro is a Transurethral Radio Frequency (TURF) Therapy device, which uses the principle of thermal treatment with the help of radio waves. Bipolar/ Monopolar Technology

In Bipolar treatment, the active output and patient return functions are both accomplished at the site of prostate. Current path is confined to tissue grasped between the electrodes.

Patient return electrode should not be applied for bipolar only procedures.
In bipolar treatment, both the active electrode and return electrode functions are performed at the site of prostate. The two electrodes perform the active and return electrode functions. Only the prostate is included in the electrical circuit. Because the return function is performed by one electrode, no patient return electrode is needed.
The active electrodes are in the prostate. The patient return electrode is attached somewhere else on the patient. The current must flow through the patient to the patient return electrode.

In monopolar technology, the active electrode is in the treated site. The patient return electrode is somewhere else on the patient’s body. The current passes through the patient as it completes the circuit from the active electrode to the patient return electrode.

Tempro treatment procedure

Tempro applicator comprises two electrodes mounted on a urethral Foley urine drainage catheter and two temperature sensors placed between catheter and electrodes. The electrodes are mounted below the Foley balloon. Tempro applicator is for single use.
The neutral electrode is a commercial disposable solid adult return electrode, connected to the device and placed on the lower back of the patient (see instruction of use).

Functions of Tempro Applicator:

a. Delivers RF energy from the controller to the prostate, producing tissue coagulation (RF current generates the heat that produces the therapeutic effect).

b. Measures prostate temperature and send the feedback to the controller

Allows urine to be drained during treatment

The urologist performs Tempro treatment as follows.

a. An hour before the treatment, the patient is given the medication in order to exclude the inflammation of the urethra post- treatment.

b. It is recommended to empty the bladder using the standard draining catheter before the treatment. (If the bladder is empty, treatment is more effective).

c. The area to be treated will be cleaned.

d. Urethra and applicator should be lubricated with Lydocaine or any other anaesthetizing gel.

e. The applicator will be inserted into the urethra and connected to the urine bag.

f. Using user-friendly interface - the treatment parameters will be set.

g. Using ‘Start’ button - a 60 minute treatment begins.

h. After the treatment the patient can go home.

Advantages of Tempro Treatment:

a. Its simplicity (it is neither associated with the risks involved in the case of TURP, nor with the undesired side effects as in the case of drug medical treatment).

b. BPH treatment may be performed as an outpatient procedure avoiding hospitalization.

c. Treatment time is only 60 minutes!

d. Only some patients need catheter for a short period of time post treatment (20%)
